Special investigator to examine diesel deal

The State Liberals will appoint a Special Investigator to examine the Weatherill Government’s energy scandal including their decision to acquire 270 megawatts of dirty diesel generation on hire-purchase.

“The Weatherill Government’s decision to acquire these dirty diesel generators on hire-purchase is a criminal waste of taxpayers’ money,” said Deputy State Liberal Leader Vickie Chapman.

“It is utterly scandalous that the Weatherill Government is prepared to waste hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on a cynical political ploy.

“Having saddled South Australians with the highest electricity prices in the country the Weatherill Government is now planning to waste hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars by acquiring dirty diesel generators on hire-purchase.

“Jay Weatherill needs to disclose the total cost of his deal to acquire dirty diesel generators on hire-purchase.

“Jay Weatherill has already admitted that his dirty diesel generators will operate for only a handful of days a year and will not drive down the price of electricity.

“Jay Weatherill also needs to reveal how much taxpayers’ money he has gifted to multinational companies Tesla and Neoen to establish the lithium battery at Jamestown.

“It is outrageous that Jay Weatherill is hiding from taxpayers exactly how much they have paid Tesla and Neoen to hook-up the battery.

“The Special Investigator will examine all aspects of the Weatherill Government’s chaotic energy plan, including the forced closure of the Northern Power station.

“Had Jay Weatherill invested just $8 million dollars a year in the Northern Power Station there would be no need for these diesel generators and South Australians would be paying significantly less for their electricity.”
