SA Chief Judge slams court facilities

State Liberals are again calling on the Weatherill Labor Government to revisit their plans for a new court precinct after scathing criticism by the Chief Justice Chris Kourakis of the conditions of courts.

In the Annual Report on the Courts Administration Authority, tabled in Parliament this week, the Chief Justice described the condition of the courts as a “serious concern”.

The Chief Justice writes: “We have a situation where our court houses are in such a dilapidated state that some courtrooms cannot even be used,” said Shadow Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman.

“This is contributing to the massive backlog of cases currently waiting for a hearing. “Making people wait years to have legal issues resolved is stressful for the participants and costly to the taxpayer.

“The South Australian court system is the epitome of the phrase: justice delayed is justice denied “After 15 years in power it’s time for the Labor Party to act.”
