The Weatherill Labor Government has announcement a list of “Development Opportunities” that they may release within the “next year”, which includes Port Adelaide – again.
Even the five page “prospectus”, which is really a pamphlet, qualifies the release of properties as “indicative only and subject to prior approval and market demand”.
The State Liberals are supportive of development at Port Adelaide but are calling on the Weatherill Labor Government to ensure that this development does not go down the path of the Newport Quays disaster.
“How can the people of Port Adelaide have any confidence this project will even be advanced?” asked Shadow Minister for Housing and Urban Development Vickie Chapman. “The last time the Labor Government joint ventured with private developers – Urban Construct in the Newport Quays development – it was aborted by Premier Weatherill just before the Port Adelaide by-election and cost taxpayers millions of dollars in the settlement of court action in 2013.
“$5 million dollars paid up on termination of the contract, a further settlement of $3.4 million plus the cost of litigation and a massive amount of resources in the development and promotion of the Newport Quays project is bad enough, and now the Government wants to put those responsible back in charge again.
“If the Weatherill Labor Government is serious about the development of Port Adelaide, and supports those who have already invested in the area, it would get out of the way and let the private sector do what it does best.
“The last thing Port Adelaide residents need is another broken promise from the Labor Government.”
