The State Liberals have called on the Weatherill Labor Government to require the use of Australian steel in the highly anticipated Festival Plaza redevelopment.
“The Festival Plaza development will be on public land and will involve public money – it must use Australian steel,” said Shadow Minister for State Development Vickie Chapman.
“We have heard a lot of talk from Tom Koutsantonis and Stephen Mullighan when it comes to using Whyalla steel but this project doesn’t rate a mention.
“I am calling on the Weatherill Labor Government to specifically require the Walker Corporation car park and public realm developments to use Australian steel.
“The State Government is currently negotiating the terms of their contract with Walker Corporation for the Festival Plaza development and the use of Australian steel should be a requirement of the final contract.”
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis has been under fire in recent weeks for being unable to disclose how much Australian steel has been used in the New Royal Adelaide Hospital.
This was after Mr Koutsantonis criticised the New South Wales Government for failing to use Australian steel in a rail development.
